The Artist and her Technique

Dorothy Cherbavaz holds a degree in Studio Art from the City University of New York. This course of study enabled her to experiment with diverse media including fiber sculpture, zinc plate etching and acrylic, pastel, oil and watercolor painting. In 1996, Dorothy tried silk painting and it was love at first sight: the colors were brilliant, the dies flowed magically, and the feel of the silk was wonderful. She quickly achieved mastery of the medium moving from more traditional techniques to a free-hand style that resembles watercolor painting. In 1999, she won the "best in show" prize at the art exhibit of the International Orchid Show at the World Financial Center in New York City. In the year 2000, she was featured on the PBS/BBC program "Obsession with Orchids". Today, her signature can be found on one-of-a-kind paintings, wall hangings and wearable art such as scarves, neck ties and pillows sold in the US and Italy.

Dorothy paints on habotai, silk satin and crepe-de-chine using traditional gutta serti and free form techniques. Her artwork shows clear influences of Western botanical, Chinese and watercolor paintings. This is easily recognizable in her tropical orchids series, bamboo and metallic chrysanthemum pieces and flower meadows paintings.

Silk Care

Spun from coccon fibers of the silk-worm, silk is a protein-like hair and needs gentle handling. This one-of-a-kind wearable art should be hand-washed in cold water with mild soap such as Woolite. Use fabric softener in the final rinse and do not wring. Hang flat to dry. Iron on silk setting on the reverse side with the silk slightly damp.
